Casual users of Linkedin and Facebook along with more savvy business owner users who have leveraged the use of social media, are all targets of bogus and dangerous phishing scams. Anyone with any type of banking account that is accessed online is also a target. The use of Facebook for personal use connecting with friends and family and for business use - having a company Facebook Page, is common place. For connecting to prospects and customers, It is also very important. Linkedin is also dynamically important for business use with connections, networking and prospecting.
In recent months, phishing scams have netted millions via bogus emails that look like they came from Facebook and Linkedin. Not surprised are you? I received two just last week.
These emails look like they could have come from either social network. They request you login to your account. Of course this provides them with access. The other bad news is a few of these phishing attacks are unleashing data swiping malware on your computer within seconds of your fake login. This puts your banking and credit card information and numbers at large risk. Yes, the tired advise to assure anti-virus and malware protection software is updated and active is once again recommended by yours truly.
People who fall prey to these attacks may be in a hurry and quickly click on a link in email they think is from the bank, credit card, Facebook or Linkedin accounts. Yes multi-task - but focus.
